Tbilisi, 25 January 2004 (RFE/RL) -- Mikheil Saakashvili was today inaugurated as Georgia's new president.
With his hand on a copy of Georgia's constitution, Saakashvili took the presidential oath in front of the parliament building, pledging security and dignity for all Georgians.
The ceremony was held where Saakashvili just two months ago led a massive wave of protests that evicted President Eduard Shevardnadze.
After being sworn in today, Saakashvili signed an act making a medieval banner Georgia's new flag.
In comments last night, Saakashvili said "painstaking work" lies ahead for Georgians in their efforts to rebuild their country.
U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell attended Saakashvili's inauguration, emphasizing U.S. support for Georgia's new government.
