Karzai Signs New Afghan Constitution Into Law

Kabul, 26 January 2004 (RFE/RL) -- Afghan Transitional Administration Chairman Hamid Karzai signed Afghanistan's new constitution into law today.
A special Constitutional Loya Jirga, or Grand Assembly, adopted the 162-article document earlier this month.

The constitution outlines a democratic Islamic state under a presidency, a two-chamber parliament, and an independent judiciary.

The text also declares men and women equal under the law. Karzai has said that the new constitution offers a chance to salvage Afghanistan after almost 25 years of nearly continual conflict.
