Vienna, 27 March 2004 (RFE/RL) -- United Nations nuclear inspectors are due to arrive in Iran today in a crucial attempt to determine whether the Islamic Republic is secretly developing atomic weapons.
Today's arrival comes after a two-week delay. Tehran tried to put off the mission earlier this month, but yielded amid world condemnation for failing to cooperate with the UN's nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
Since February 2003, the IAEA has been attempting to verify whether Iran's nuclear program is peaceful, or devoted to secretly developing atomic weapons, as the United States alleges.
The UN team will focus its inspections on the Natanz uranium-enrichment plant and the Isfahan nuclear technology center.
