Tehran, 12 April 2004 (RFE/RL) -- Five UN nuclear experts today arrived in Iran to inspect whether Tehran has fulfilled its promise to suspend making centrifuges for enriching uranium.
Mohammad Saeedi, a top official at Iran's Atomic Energy Organization, said that the five inspectors arrived early this morning as part of a pre-planned visit. He said that Iran suspended making and assembling the technology on 9 April.
Enriched uranium is used for fueling nuclear power stations, but if enriched further, it can become weapons-grade material suitable for making a nuclear bomb.
The United States says that Tehran is secretly developing a nuclear weapons program. Tehran denies the charge.
