22 April 2004 -- NATO says Kosovar Albanian leaders are doing too little to restore security after ethnic violence last month that left 19 people dead and hundreds injured.
NATO Secretary-General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer said while meeting with local leaders in Pristina today that he expected more responsibility, more rebuilding, and stronger language from them condemning interethnic violence.
De Hoop Scheffer, who led a delegation of alliance ambassadors to the province, said that NATO "cannot accept a wait-and-see approach" by the Kosovar Albanian leadership.
After the visit of the NATO delegation to Kosovo, U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Kathleen Stephens and NATO Ambassador Robert Serry called in a statement for the prosecution of those responsible for the ethnic unrest and urged that stalled talks between ethnic Serbian and ethnic Albanian leaders be resumed.
