Slobodan Milosevic
5 May 2004 -- Prosecutors today urged the UN war crimes tribunal in The Hague to throw out a motion asking that genocide charges against former Yugoslav leader Slobodan Milosevic be dropped.
Chief war crimes prosecutor Carla Del Ponte said materials already presented to the court are sufficient to prove that the former Yugoslav president had "genocidal intent" that led to war crimes committed in Bosnia by forces under his control.
Milosevic is defending himself before the UN court. The motion to drop the genocide charge was filed by a group of lawyers appointed to help ensure that he receives a fair trial.
Also today, the UN tribunal confirmed that Milosevic will start presenting his defense case on 22 June, two weeks later than planned. A court statement said the trial was delayed due to Milosevic's continuing poor health.
