U.S. Seeking Extradition Of Radical Muslim Cleric

27 May 2004 -- British police have arrested Muslim cleric Abu Hamza on an extradition warrant to the United States.
The United States accuses Hamza of trying to create a terrorist training camp in the U.S. state of Oregon while providing aid to Al-Qaeda and the Taliban in Afghanistan.

U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft today said that Washington is actively seeking the extradition of Hamza.

"We are actively seeking Hamza's extradition from Great Britain to face justice in our courts on these serious charges," Ashcroft said.

Hamza is accused of 11 terrorism charges, including hostage taking, as well as inspiring hatred against Britain and the United States during sermons at his mosque in London, where he has called for jihad, or holy struggle, against the West.
