Bush Arrives In Italy For WWII Commemorations

4 June 2004 -- U.S. President George W. Bush arrived in Italy early today at the start of a European trip to mark the 60th anniversary of important World War II events.
Bush is expected to attend ceremonies marking the anniversary of Rome's liberation from the Nazis by Allied forces on 4 June 1944.

He is due to hold talks with Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, an ally of Bush in the Iraq war, and Pope John Paul II, who opposed the war.

After Italy, Bush is due to travel to France for ceremonies marking the 6 June 1944 D-Day Allied invasion of Nazi-occupied France.

Authorities in Italy and France are deploying thousands of police and troops to guard against terrorist attacks or violence linked to antiwar protests during the commemorations.
