7 June 2004 -- Russia's deputy foreign minister has said an amended UN Security Council resolution on the future of Iraq is a great improvement on earlier drafts.
Yurii Fedotov told Russian media on 7 June that the revised U.S./U.K. draft resolution negotiated over the past two days "reflects proposals from Russia, France, Germany, China, and other Security Council members."
The proposed resolution outlines Iraqi sovereignty after the handover of power from the U.S.-led force to an interim Iraqi government on 30 June.
British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw told the British parliament today that the Security Council is nearing a vote on the resolution, which was circulated today among the members.
"These discussions with our Security Council partners have taken place in a constructive atmosphere, and I hope that this process may be brought to a conclusion very soon," Straw said.
However, Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, criticized the latest draft for not setting a deadline for pulling troops from Iraq.
