21 June 2004 -- Exit polls show that Romania's ruling left-wing Social Democratic Party suffered setbacks yesterday in local election runoffs.
The polls say the party failed to win a key seat in Transylvania and lost most of the district mayoral seats in the capital Bucharest.
In Bucharest, the party lost four of its seats, narrowly retaining one seat in the district races.
Prime Minister Adrian Nastase said the ruling party had done well in some areas, but promised to react to voters' dissatisfaction.
An hour before polls closed, around 47.5 percent of some 12 million eligible voters had cast ballots in 1,800 localities where no candidate managed to secure a majority in the first round of voting earlier this month. Official results are expected by 22 June.
