24 June 2004 -- Russian President Vladimir Putin said today Russia will increase its military presence in the North Caucasus region following deadly attacks by militants this week in a republic bordering Chechnya.
At least 92 people, most of them security personnel, were killed on 21 June when militants simultaneously attacked police stations and checkpoints in three cities in Ingushetia.
Putin had previously vowed to "destroy" those who carried out the attacks.
Speaking during a visit to a military base in Russia's Far East today, Putin said he will step up the presence in the region of both Interior and Defense ministry troops.
