25 June 2004 -- Afghan Transitional Administration Chairman Hamid Karzai today reiterated his appeal to NATO to fulfill its pledge to send more troops to protect his country's elections and ensure they can be held on schedule in September.
Karzai made the appeal to NATO's military chief General James Jones during talks in Kabul today ahead of a NATO summit in Istanbul next week.
Presidential spokesman Hamid Elmi said Karzai asked Jones to help Afghanistan so that polls can take place on time. Elmi said Jones replied that NATO members at the summit would stress the need to deliver on promises to assist Afghanistan.
Earlier, the New York-based rights group Human Rights Watch said NATO should immediately send more troops, warning that blame for any failure of the polls would rest on the United States and its NATO allies.
