29 June 2004 -- Militants in Iraq claim to have shot dead a U.S. soldier who was abducted near Baghdad in April.
Al-Jazeera television quoted the militants as saying the soldier, Keith Maupin, was executed because the United States did not change its policy in Iraq.
The U.S. military said it could not confirm the identity of a man seen being shot by the militants on a videotape.
The U.S. soldier was reported killed hours after the United States returned sovereignty to an interim Iraqi government on 28 June.
Welcoming the power transfer, the United Nations Security Council has called on Iraqis to "peaceably" implement the country's political timetable, starting with elections no later than the end of January 2005.
