17 August 2004 -- The U.S. envoy to Afghanistan today said the United States has brokered a cease-fire between rival militia factions in the western province of Herat.
Zalmay Khalilzad gave no details of the agreement. But Khalilzad added that U.S. military personnel accompanied Afghan National Army forces sent to Herat, and that U.S. "air assets" were monitoring the situation.
Earlier today, RFE/RL correspondents in Afghanistan reported intensified fighting between the rival militia factions in Herat.
Some 1,500 Afghan government troops have been sent to Herat since a militia alliance attacked Herat Province Governor Mohammad Ismail Khan's private militia on 14 August.
