Romania On Flood Alert After Heavy Rains

28 August 2004 -- Parts of eastern and southern Romania are on alert today after torrential rains wreaked havoc on the country's Black Sea coast and the national weather service warned more storms were to expected in the coming days.
Regional government officials and police say that rain has already flooded around 50 houses in southeastern Romania and damaged more than 70 others in the northeast. It has also stranded holidaymakers and caused blackouts in scores of towns and villages.

Police said hundreds of tourists seeking to leave Black Sea beaches to escape the storms were trapped in their vehicles along main roads which, in some areas, were covered by more than a meter of water.

The local authorities in the worst-hit areas said extra police and firemen had been called out to deal with the crisis.
