3 September 2004 -- Police in Kandahar say an explosion in the southern Afghan city today killed one person and injured two others.
The local deputy police chief, Salim Khan, said a vehicle packed with explosives went off as a taxi was driving by. The taxi driver was killed and his two passengers seriously hurt. The three victims were all local residents and civilians.
Kandahar was a stronghold of the Taliban who were forced from power by U.S.-led forces in late 2001. The Taliban have vowed to disrupt Afghanistan's presidential election in October.
Also today, the U.S. military said several suspected Taliban fighters were killed late yesterday in a firefight with Afghan security forces in the southeast province of Khost near the border with Pakistan. Two Afghan soldiers were injured in the clash.
