7 September 2004 -- NATO Secretary-General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer has called a special meeting of NATO countries and Russia for today to discuss the school siege in southern Russia, in which more than 330 people died.
NATO spokesman James Appathurai said the intention is to demonstrate solidarity with Russia following the bloody ending of the hostage-taking crisis.
The NATO-Russia Council is expected to meet at the level of ambassadors this afternoon and issue a statement following their session.
The Russia-NATO Council was set up in 2002 for cooperation on security issues such as terrorism and the spread of weapons of mass destruction.
