7 September 2004 -- Slobodan Milosevic's new lawyers are expected today to call the first witness in the former Yugoslav president's war crimes defense case.
One of Milosevic's legal aides, Zdenko Tomanovic, is quoted by The Associated Press as saying Smilja Avramov would be called to testify.
She is a retired Serbian international law professor.
Milosevic is reportedly refusing to cooperate with his new lawyers, Steven Kay and Gillian Higgins of Britain.
The lawyers were appointed last week against Milosevic's will by the judges at the United Nations war crimes tribunal at The Hague.
The step was taken in an effort to speed up the trial, which has been delayed repeatedly due to Milosevic's ill health.
Milosevic is facing 66 counts of war crimes in connection with the 1990s wars in Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, and Kosovo.
