15 September 2004 -- Students returned to school in Beslan today for the first time since more than 300 children and their parents were killed earlier this month in a violent end to a mass hostage-taking in the North Ossetian town.
The reopening of Beslan's schools had been planned for yesterday, but was delayed at the last moment because security checks of all the buildings had not been completed.
Security has been tightened across Russia since the three-day seige of some 1,200 students and adults at the Beslan school ended with explosions and a shoot-out.
Officials have no plans to reopen the school where the seige started on 1 September, the first day of school in Russia. Children involved in the hostage-taking have been granted stays, along with their families, at sanatoriums.
