15 September 2004 -- Iran's Foreign Ministry has summoned Iraq's envoy to Tehran to protest the killing of an Iranian civil employee in Iraq.
Iranian state television said Labib Mohammadi, who worked for Iran's Pilgrimage Organization in Iraq, was killed by unknown assailants near the city of Karbala on 12 September.
The report quoted a Foreign Ministry official as saying Iran holds the interim Iraqi government responsible for the safety of Iranians and has demanded a prompt investigation of Mohammadi's killing.
Several Iranians, including four journalists and a diplomat, were seized in Iraq in recent months. The four journalists who were arrested by Iraqi police were eventually released, but the Iranian diplomat who was kidnapped by a militant group has not been freed.
