22 September 2004 -- Two car bombs in Baghdad killed at least 11 people and injured some 50 others today.
The first car bomb targeted men applying to join the new Iraqi security forces. The second car bomb exploded near a U.S. checkpoint.
U.S. forces clashed with supporters of radical Shi'ite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr in Baghdad's Al-Sadr City neighborhood, reportedly killing 15 people.
U.S. troops were also engaged in fighting north of Baghdad in the city of Samara.
The headless body of the second American hostage executed this week by militants loyal to Jordanian terrorist Musab al-Zarqawi was found and identified today.
The militant group still holds one British citizen. The group is demanding the release of all women held in Iraqi prisons.
The U.S.-led coalition has said there are only two women being held in Iraqi jails, both of whom were researchers in chemical and biological weapons programs under former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein.
U.S. officials said neither would be released, though some Iraqi officials indicated they would be released in the coming days.
