26 September 2004 -- U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell said today that the insurgency in Iraq is getting worse.
Speaking in Washington, Powell said the United States will have to increase its efforts to defeat the insurgency, which he said is seeking to disrupt national elections set for January.
Overnight, U.S. forces attacked suspected insurgent positions in the mainly Sunni Muslim city of Al-Fallujah for a third time in 24 hours. The military said the strike targeted a meeting of suspected militants loyal to Al-Qaeda-linked Jordanian militant Abu Mus'ab al-Zarqawi.
Today two car bombs detonated near Al-Fallujah, injuring U.S. and Iraqi soldiers.
