Russian Cabinet Approves Kyoto Protocol

30 September -- The Russian government has approved ratification of the Kyoto protocol on combating global warming.
The treaty will now be submitted to the State Duma lower house for a vote.

The Kyoto protocol seeks to reduce emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases widely believed to cause global warming.

It needs Russia's support in order to come into force worldwide.

Russian President Vladimir Putin in May pledged to speed up approval of the treaty in return for European Union support of Russia's bid to join the World Trade Organization.
