Violence Erupts In Afghanistan

30 September 2004 -- Militants suspected of being from the ousted Taliban regime killed at least seven Afghan soldiers at a remote checkpoint in southeastern Afghanistan.
Zabul Province Governor Khan Mohammad said two soldiers managed to escape the attack today. They reported that some 40 suspected Taliban surrounded the outpost, forcing the soldiers to disarm before gunning them down.

At least seven more soldiers were reportedly killed in other clashes in Zabul Province in the past two days.

Taliban fighters have pledged to stop Afghanistan's 9 October elections with violence.
