15 October 2004 -- A British ambassador removed from his post after he criticized Uzbekistan's human rights record says he plans to take legal action against the British government over damage to his health.
Britain's Foreign Office said yesterday it recalled Craig Murray from his post because he had lost the confidence of senior officials and colleagues.
But Murray told BBC radio today he was a "victim of conscience." He said his superiors had waged a campaign to oust him from his job after he criticized human rights abuses in Uzbekistan, particularly the use of torture in jails.
Murray said he had suffered a nervous breakdown and high blood pressure brought on by what he called unfounded charges against him.
