25 October 2004 -- Kosovo's Central Electoral Commission said today that President Ibrahim Rugova's party won the province's general elections held on 23 October.
The chairman of the commission chaired by the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), Adnan Merovci, said Rugova's Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK) gained 45 percent of the vote.
LDK's main rival, Democratic Party of Kosovo, had 28 percent. The Alliance for the Future of Kosovo came in third with 8 percent.
OSCE mission head Pascal Fieschi said today that the results were not complete and some verification still needs to be done.
The electoral commission said turnout was 51 percent.
However, fewer than 1 percent of 150,000 eligible Serbian voters cast their ballots amid a boycott urged by ethnic Serbs heading into the voting.
NATO Secretary-General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer, and other officials criticized the lack of participation by the Serbs.
Kosovo is a province of Serbia under UN administration.
