15 November 2004 -- Iran says it has not given way on its principle that it has the right to engage in nuclear processes like the enrichment of uranium.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamid Reza Assefi said yesterday's agreement with a trio of European Union countries to suspend enrichment processes is a temporary and voluntary move. He said the deal with France, Germany, and Great Britain was the "best decision under the currrent circumstances".
Tehran says its nuclear activities are for peaceful energy purposes. Washington says Iran is secretly developing a nuclear weapons program, and wants the the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to refer Iran to the UN Security Council for the imposition of possible sanctions.
According to diplomats, Iran's decision to temporarily suspend enrichment will be included in a report to be released today by the IAEA. That report will be reviewed by the IAEA board of governors on 25 November. The board will decide what action, if any, should be taken against Iran.
