30 November 2004 -- Iran's top national-security official said today that his country has only agreed to a temporary freeze of its controversial nuclear-fuel activities and will never totally abandon its uranium-enrichment work.
The statement, by Hasan Rowhani of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, came one day after the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) adopted a resolution endorsing Iran's agreement to freeze all activities that could be used to develop nuclear weapons.
Rowhani said Iran is prepared to keep uranium-enrichment activities frozen as long as negotiations on its nuclear program continue with Germany, France, and Britian, who hope to persuade Iran to make the suspension permanent. But he said the talks should not last too long.
U.S. officials said yesterday that Washington has not ruled out referring Iran to the UN Security Council over its nuclear program, which the United States alleges is aimed at developing a nuclear-weapons program.
