17 December 2004 -- Russia and Iran said today in Moscow they will intensify their economic and technological cooperation, including construction of a second nuclear reactor in the Islamic state.
Russia is currently completing construction of Iran's first nuclear reactor at the southern port of Bushehr amid fears in Washington that the technology is being used in secret-weapons programs. The reactor is expected to be completed next year.
Visiting Iranian Economics and Finance Minister Safdar Hosseini told Interfax news agency that a timetable for building the additional unit will be agreed at the next meeting of the Russian-Iranian intergovernmental commission.
Russian Nuclear Power Minister Aleksandr Rumyantsyev said that Iran plans to build six or seven reactors and is in negotiation with potential partners in Russia and Europe.
