21 December 2004 -- Iran said today a UN resolution that condemns the Islamic Republic for public executions, floggings, arbitrary sentences, torture, and discrimination against women is baseless.
Canada sponsored the human rights resolution that was adopted by a vote of 71 in favor, 54 against, and 55 abstentions at the UN General Assembly meeting.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamid Reza Assefi told the Iranian ISNA news agency the resolution "is not based on documents, is remote from the current realities of Iran, is based on distorted, unreliable sources, and is discredited."
He added that the resolution was "a completely political act" and was intended for propaganda against Iran.
