Romanian President Nominates Prime Minister

22 December 2004 -- Romanian President Traian Basescu today nominated Liberal leader and businessman Calin Popescu-Tariceanu as the country's next prime minister.
Basescu said Tariceanu has 10 days to present a government for approval by parliament.

It is unclear whether Parliament will approve the government because his centrist Justice and Truth Alliance does not have a majority.

Basescu took office on 20 December. He defeated former Prime Minister Adrian Nastase, an ex-communist, in a 12 December presidential runoff vote.

Tariceanu, who is the acting leader of the National Liberal Party (PNL), has promised tax and economic reforms.

The Justice and Truth Alliance consists of the PNL and the Democrat Party, Basescu's former party. Basescu under the constitution had to resign from the party before taking over the presidency.
