Belarusian FM: no Orange Revolution in Minsk
7 January 2005 -- Belarusian Foreign Minister Siarhey Martynau has said that Belarus will never experience a political upheaval like the recent one in neighboring Ukraine.
Martynau made his remarks in an interview with Reuters yesterday. He said President Alyaksandr Lukashenka does not face the same threat because Belarus is economically and politically stable.
Belarus is increasingly isolated and criticized by Western institutions for crackdowns on political opposition and independent media. The European Union has slapped travel bans on some of Belarus's top officials, and Lukashenka himself is accused of retaining power through fraudulent polls.
Ukraine's so-called Orange Revolution followed the Rose Revolution a year ago in Georgia that led to changes in the ruling elites in the country.
