28 January 2004 -- German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder said today that the problem of Iran's nuclear-development program should only be resolved using diplomacy, not force.
Schroeder, who opposed the U.S.-led war in Iraq, told those gathered at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, that "the last thing we need in that region is another conflict."
But Schroeder also said he believed Iran should completely give up its nuclear program.
Meanwhile, Israeli Deputy Prime Minister Shimon Peres welcomed the election of Mahmud Abbas as Palestinian leader, saying Abbas had managed to change the whole atmosphere in the region within a few days of coming into office.
Peres also noted the new approach of Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon toward peace talks since Abbas was elected.
