8 February 2005 -- Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko introduced the country's new security chief today and warned the security service that it should stay out of politics and commerce and concentrate on fighting corruption.
Yushchenko named Oleksandr Turchynov head of the Ukrainian Security Service and told security officials that "we will make this country honest."
The Ukrainian Security Service has a reputation for being corrupt, with officers accused of working for the business elite and allegedly being involved in illegal weapons sales.
Meanwhile, new Ukrainian Prime Minister Yuliya Tymoshenko said today the country's prosecutor-general will look into the legality of all privatization conducted during the time Leonid Kuchma was Ukraine's president.
Kuchma stepped down late last year when his second term in office ended but the election for his replacement was a complicated process that involved three presidential votes, eventually resulting in a victory for Yushchenko.
