9 February 2005 -- Russia's parliament today turned down a vote of no confidence in the government.
Only 112 deputies in the 450-seat State Duma, the lower house of parliament, supported the no-confidence vote.
Opposition groups had pushed for the vote after controversial social welfare reforms triggered massive street protests.
The Kremlin-sponsored reforms replaced social benefits such as free public transport and subsidized medicines with cash payments.
Today's vote came after Prime Minister Mikhail Fradkov accepted responsibility for the controversial reform.
