11 March 2005 -- The United States says it is ready to offer Iran some economic incentives if it abandons its uranium enrichment activities.
Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice made the announcement in a statement today.
She said that President George W. Bush has decided that the United States will drop its objection to Iran's application to the World Trade Organization.
She also said the United States will consider allowing some sales of spare parts for Iranian civilian aircraft. Many of the sales would be European Union countries.
Rice said the move is aimed at supporting diplomatic efforts by France, Germany, and Britain to persuade Iran to cease uranium enrichment and reprocessing activities.
The United States had previously opposed offering Iran any incentives.
