19 April 2005 -- Moldovan Prime Minister Vasile Tarlev won parliament's approval today for a new cabinet, a month after his Communist Party won the parliamentary elections.
Tarlev won the votes of his party's 56 deputies, while 21 members of the centrist opposition Our Moldova alliance voted against his cabinet. Three smaller opposition parties abstained from the vote.
The 101-seat legislature is dominated by the communists, who also gave a new term in office earlier this month to their leader, state President Vladimir Voronin.
Tarlev, 41, pledged in a speech before parliament to curb corruption and bring Moldova, a former Soviet republic, closer to the European Union.
He also promised to provide for peaceful relations among Moldova's ethnic groups, fight separatism and attract foreign investment.
