U.S. Resumes Aid To Serbia-Montenegro

9 June 2005 -- The United States has resumed aid to Serbia and Montenegro that was frozen at the beginning of the year to express dissatisfaction with Belgrade's cooperation with the UN war crimes tribunal.
The announcement was made in Belgrade today by U.S. undersecretary of state Nicholas Burns.

He said the resumption of some $10 million in aid is in return for Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica's success in convincing a dozen war crimes suspects to surrender to The Hague-based tribunal.

Burns also said he believes Serbia is making serious efforts to bring to justice top war crimes fugitive Ratko Mladic, the wartime Bosnian Serb army commander.

In a related development, one of the dozen suspects who surrendered to the Hague in the last few months, Serbian former general Momcilo Perisic, was granted provisional release on 9 June.
