1 July 2005 (RFE/RL) -- Kyrgyzstan's outgoing lower house of parliament convened its last session today, with lawmakers saying they have achieved their goals, RFE/RL's Kyrgyz Service reported.
The outgoing lower house is credited with overseeing the legal transfer of power from the old parliament to the new one.
Ishenbai Kadyrbekov, speaker of the outgoing lower house, told RFE/RL today that the outgoing parliament played a crucial role in the ouster of former President Askar Akaev in March.
"By its activities, by its deeds, by its political stance, [the outgoing parliament] has shaken the old government and did all so that Akaev would leave," Kadyrbekov said. "If this parliament was not such an obstinate and consistent, then maybe Akaev would have continued his position for another term."
The upper house of the outgoing parliament ceased its activities in late March, a few days after the popular uprising that toppled Akaev's government.
