China, Uzbekistan Seek More Cooperation

Karimov touted a new phase in Uzbek-Chinese relations (file photo) 18 July 2005 -- Uzbek President Islam Karimov today told visiting Chinese Vice Premier Wu Yi that relations between the two counrty's have developed to a new phase.
Addressing a forum of Chinese and Uzbek entrepreneurs earlier, Wu appealed to both Chinese and Uzbek entrepreneurs to expand economic and technical cooperation.

For his part, Uzbekistan's First Deputy Prime Minister Rustam Azimov said Tashkent will provide preferential policy to Chinese investors.

Under an agreement signed between Uzbekneftegaz and Sinopec, the Chinese company will invest $106 million in oil exploration and extraction in Uzbekistan.

Uzbekistan is the second leg of Wu's Central Asia tour, which already took her to Kazakhstan. She will later head on to Turkmenistan and Tajikistan.
