20 July 2005 -- A British military regiment today said that it "bitterly regrets" the death of an Iraqi prisoner in its custody.
The statement comes as three soldiers from Britain's Queens Lancashire Regiment are to be tried in Britain for war crimes. One of them faces manslaughter charges over the death of the Iraqi detainee.
Defense Secretary John Reid today said that the British military has the "very highest standards" and that troops failing to meet such standards will be investigated, and if appropriate, prosecuted.
Reid said that justice must now be allowed to take its course in the case of the three soldiers.
