Karzai Urges West Not To Link Terrorism With Islam

President Karzai (file photo) 22 July 2005 -- Afghan President Hamid Karzai urged the West today not to link terrorism with Islam.
Karzai said associating Islam with terrorism is a "defect in Western mentality." He said those carrying out attacks have no religion and operate in a kind of "cult which is all their own."

Karzai also said that some Islamic schools, or madrasahs, are being used as training camps for extremists.

Karzai made his remarks in Rome, where he arrived yesterday from London. Karzai is seeking support for Afghanistan's reconstruction and economic development. He is expected to meet with Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi today.
