Two Police Killed In Russian Caucasus

23 July 2005 -- Two traffic policemen were shot dead overnight in Russia's North Caucasus.
Russian media say the officers died in a gun battle with attackers who opened fire on their car in Nalchik, the regional capital of Kabardino-Balkaria, which borders North Ossetia.

Authorities say it is the second deadly attack on police in the area in two days.

In Daghestan, another North Caucasus republic, bombing and other attacks have increased since the start of the year, targeting mainly police officers and local officials.

Such attacks are often blamed on Daghestani hard-line Islamists.
