4 August 2005 -- Diplomatic sources in Vienna say European diplomats have asked for an emergency meeting of the UN atomic energy agency (IAEA) next week to keep pressure on Iran not to resume sensitive nuclear fuel cycle work.
But In Tehran, Hossein Moussavian, a spokesman for Iran's nuclear negotiating team, said today that any move by the EU to call an emergency meeting of the IAEA in Vienna would be a violation of international rules. He added that Iran would resume fuel cycle work within two days at a plant in Isfahan.
Yesterday, Iran had said it would delay by a few days any resumption of sensitive nuclear work. The EU is trying to broker an agreement to give Iran political and economic incentives in return for abandoning its nuclear program. Iran denies Western charges that it is secretly pursuing nuclear weapons.
