Members of the committee drafting the constitution
11 August 2005 -- A group claiming to be Al-Qaeda in Iraq vowed today to kill anyone involved in drafting the country's new constitution.
The claim was made in a statement posted on a website used by militants. Its authenticity could not be verified.
The group, led by Jordanian-born terrorist Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, has in the past said that Islamic law should be the only legislation to govern Iraq.
The role of Islam is one of several sticking points that have divided drafters of Iraq's new constitution.
The United States is pushing for a draft constitution to be completed by a 15 August deadline. It sees the document as a chance to bring into the political process Sunni Arabs, from whom the insurgency draws most of its supporters.
