Iraq Attacks Target Police

22 August 2005 (RFE/RL) - Police say insurgents have killed at least 17 Iraqi security personnel in separate attacks across Iraq.
Eight Iraqi police commandos were killed and four injured overnight in a car-bomb explosion at a checkpoint near a suspension bridge in Baghdad's Karada neighborhood.

Eight other police officers died along with two civilians today when gunmen riddled their bus with bullets in Tarmiyah, north of Baghdad.

In the northern city of Kirkuk, gunmen killedcounterterrorism security official Captain Ibrahim Saeed and his wife.

Police also said they found the bodies of five unidentified men in various parts of Baghdad. All the bodies were handcuffed, bound, and shot in the head.

The U.S. military, meanwhile, reported the deaths of three American soldiers in different incidents on 21 August.

And the Foreign Ministry in Islamabad says 11 Pakistani construction workers who had been kidnapped in Iraq on 13 August 13 were released today.
