26 August 2005 (RFE/RL) -- Iran's chief nuclear negotiator, Supreme National Security Council Secretary Ali Larijani, says Tehran hopes that nuclear talks with Europe will continue, but that it is not afraid of referral to the UN Security Council for possible sanctions.
Larijani made his remarks in Vienna today after talks with Muhammad el-Baradei, head of the United Nations' International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The discussions came ahead of el-Baradei's upcoming report on Iran's compliance with international nuclear safeguards.
IAEA spokeswoman Melissa Fleming described today's talks to RFE/RL: "It was a constructive meeting and, by all account, Mr. Larijani demonstrated a commitment to working closely with the IAEA to resolve these outstanding issues."
Fleming said some of those outstanding issues concern Iran's past uranium enrichment activities.
Larijani told el-Baradei that Tehran is preparing new proposals for nuclear talks with European negotiators next month.
Great Britain, France, and Germany were trying to convince Iran to gives up uranium enrichment, but cancelled negotiations after Iran rejected their offer and resumed some uranium work.
Yesterday, Larijani called for more countries to join the three European countries at the talks.
