Belarus Detains Polish Community Activists

27 August 2005 -- Belarus police arrested two reporters today.
One journalist, a Pole, was on assignment from the Warsaw-published "Solidarnosc" newspaper. He was detained in the western Grodno province. The other is a Belarus reporter employed by "Magazin Polskiy," a local magazine serving Belarus' ethnic Polish community.

They had been en route to the city Volkovynsk to attend a community meeting of ethnic Poles.

Volkovynsk law enforcement officers also arrested one of the meeting organizers, an ethnic Pole living in Belarus.
A spokesman for the Polish Association of Belarus says that Belarusian authorities have been detaining its leaders and activists in advance of the community union's congress scheduled for today.
