28 August 2005 -- Iranian judges were today given permission to carry guns after a prominent judge involved in anticorruption cases was shot and seriously wounded in Tehran.
Justice Minister Jamal Karimi Rad said Judge Mohammad Reza Aghazadeh was shot in the eye while on his way to work today and was rushed to hospital.
The judge has been in charge of important cases involving land and property corruption in Karaj, a city to the west of Tehran.
Earlier this month, Massoud Moghadassi, deputy prosecutor in Tehran, was shot dead. Other judges have also been attacked.
Tehran's criminal prosecutor, Fakhroldin Jaffarzadeh, said the latest shooting meant judges would have to be armed. He said all judges from prosecutors' offices will carry firearms as pf 29 August.
