Ayatollah Khamenei (file photo) 1 September 2005 (RFE/RL) -- Iran's official media today reported that the country's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has blamed U.S.-led coalition forces for a deadly stampede that killed almost 1,000 people in Iraq.
Khamenei said that "Iraq's occupiers" were responsible for the tragedy and said and they should be "held accountable."

Khamenei was quoted on Iranian state television as calling on Iraqis to maintain unity and "disappoint the enemy."

The term "enemy" is usually used by Iran's clerical leaders to refer to the United States.

Iran's President Mahmud Ahmadinejad called Iraqi President Jalal Talabani to express his "sadness" over the incident.
